Dr Bartolacci has worked at John Hunter Hospital as a specialist anaesthetist since 1997. In this role he is often the clinical leader of the operating suite. He triages the incoming emergency cases and manages both the staffing and smooth running of the operating suite. Dr Bartolacci worked with CareFlight and the Hunter Retrieval Service for over 30 years, during which time he was the medical team leader. He retired from Retrieval Medicine in 2025 after 34 years of service.

He has vast trauma and prehospital experience and is considered one of the most experienced Retrieval Medicine Specialists in Australia. He continues to work in private anaesthesia and also holds a staff specialist appointment in Voluntary Assisted Dying.
